This document is for anyone interested in audiovisual journalism. Whether you’re interested in making video essays or applying for a news production job, the information here may be useful.
The baseline for any audiovisual journalism is – journalism. Journalism, at its core, seeks to inform people and document our world. To be a journalist, you must have an objective method of verifying and reflecting accurate information. This method is best to learn in a newsroom – you’re surrounded by people who think in this method everyday. You can learn outside of a newsroom but it’s much harder. I’m going to try and introduce you to these objective verification methods. It’s called a method, but it functions more like a constant thought process.
This document does not cover everything you need to know. This is simply one document that can help you in your journey to becoming a journalist. This is an educational material, but it is not a replacement for experience or certified education. My experience with journalism comes from 2.5 years of news production experience. I wrote scripts, chose stories, determined the order they would go on air, made graphics, chose video and sound elements, chose camera shots, timed out the show, and more. My skillset comes down to reflecting complex truths in an entertaining and quick way.
